A new voice for Oregon's child and adolescent psychiatrists

Meet COCAP

Stronger support. Better care for Oregon youth.

Thank you for joining our first meeting! If you weren't able to join us, we hope to see you at the next one. Here you can catch up on what we shared, join a committee, and stay in the loop as COCAP grows.

COCAP strengthens child and adolescent mental health care across Oregon by supporting the psychiatric workforce, advancing education, and advocating for better access to quality care for youth and families.

Here's the short version

The Coalition of Oregon Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a new nonprofit bringing Oregon's child and adolescent psychiatrists together. Here is what we shared about who we are and how COCAP works.

Meet the board

  • Kyle Johnson, MDChair
  • Karen Bos, MDVice Chair
  • Naomi Fishman, MDSecretary
  • Nikhil Rao, MDTreasurer
  • Karina España, MDProgram Chair
  • Cindy Smith, MDBoard Member
  • Ken Ensroth, MDBoard Member
Staff Deanna Murry, Executive Director Leads COCAP's day-to-day operations in support of the board. The Executive Director is not a board member.

The board officers form COCAP's Executive Committee. A new board seat is being added for a child and adolescent psychiatry fellow.

How the board works

  • The board currently has seven directors: five officers and two board members.
  • COCAP is committed to a variety of voices at the table and is exploring adding seats to the board.
  • When seats open, COCAP invites applications and the board makes selections.
  • Directors serve 3-year terms, up to three in a row. Officers serve 1-year terms and can be reelected.

Advisory committees

  • Two new committees are recruiting now: Program and Mentorship and Education.
  • Committees bring member ideas and recommendations to the board, and each includes at least two board directors.

A seat at the national table

COCAP is working toward becoming AACAP's regional organization for Oregon. Once that happens, Oregon can likely send three delegates to AACAP's Assembly of Regional Organizations, and members active in COCAP will be given preference.

Advisory committee application

Program Committee

The Program Committee plans COCAP's programming, beginning with our annual spring CME event. Its goals are to:

  • Build a cohesive, inclusive professional community through programming that creates connection, belonging, and shared purpose.
  • Bring enriching ideas to our field that challenge us to think differently about the youth and families we serve, about one another, and about our evolving practice.
  • Reflect the breadth of our profession, from trainees to early, mid, and late career clinicians, with room for mentorship and learning in both directions.
Who should apply: AACAP members at any stage of career. Trainee representation is critical, and there are designated spots for trainees.
Commitment: Regular email coordination, meetings every one to two months, and attending the spring program. Tasks include program development, reviewing submissions, coordinating speakers, logistics, spreading the word, and day-of support.

Committee members are AACAP members. Not a member yet? Please still apply and we will share how to join.

Thank you for applying

We received your Program Committee application. We will be in touch after applications close.

Mentorship and Education Committee

This committee supports the next generation of child and adolescent psychiatrists and the people who mentor them. Its goals are to:

  • Foster mentorship and professional development on careers in child psychiatry, through events where trainees learn from child psychiatrists who represent the diversity of our field.
  • Strengthen connection and community across child psychiatry, with rewarding career interactions for trainees and for those out of training.
  • Offer leadership opportunities within COCAP for trainees who serve on the committee.
Who should apply: Anyone interested in contributing to our community in these areas. You do not need a current role in education or training, and we want members who represent many ways to be a child psychiatrist. Seats are reserved for a medical student, a general psychiatry resident, and a CAP fellow.
Commitment: Regular email communication, virtual meetings every other month, helping plan and take part in a few events each year such as career panels and mentorship events, and attending the spring program to support trainee engagement.

Committee members are AACAP members. Not a member yet? Please still apply and we will share how to join.
